Importance of developing social skills for students

April 17, 2019

Mr. Deepak B Phatak, professor at IIT Bombay while speaking at the institute day celebration of National Institute of Technology (NIT) stressed the importance of developing social skills for students. He also pointed out that academic institutions play an important role in shaping society.

He added that a large number of people did not avail of the opportunities that an institute like NIT has to offer. Though the country has been making rapid progress in solving ignorance and poverty, as a nation the country still has to develop a lot, said Phatak, who is Subrao Nilekani chair professor.

He spoke on developmental issues such as low gross enrolment ratio in higher education, having per-capita income levels among the lowest in the world and the differences in terms of religion and language.

“Abdul Kalam had excelled in appreciating talent in young and old and that is an important trait of a leader. He exhorted the audience to develop such leadership skills and make it their ambition to improve themselves on a daily basis,” he said.

He advised the students not to compromise one’s personal life to contribute to society. “People performing well on their personal and family front are in a much better situation to contribute more significantly to the nation.”

The students who have excelled in academics and the faculty members who have contributed to significant research publications and citations were honored with awards.

NIT Trichy director Mini Shaji Thomas said that students must create an international presence and impact, improve global and national rankings, develop innovative solutions, and contribute more to the society and neighbourhood. With research-led teaching, inspiring faculties, highly skilled staff, and well-developed students, the transition will be seamless, she said.
