GATE likely to be made compulsory to get “Engineering degree” – Here’re the details

November 15, 2018

Considering the rising number of unemployed engineering graduates, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) took an appropriate decision. AICTE made it compulsory for all the Engineering students across the country to pass Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) to get an engineering degree. This decision is likely to be implemented from the academic year 2019-20. In the recent meeting, the Council has also passed a resolution in this regard.

According to the report published in The New Indian Express, students will get degree certificates only after clearing GATE, said AICTE officials.

It may be mentioned that in India, more than 7 lakh students complete their graduation course from around 3 thousand engineering institutions every year.

This decision of AICTE has received a mixed reaction. Many students are unhappy with the decision.

Some faculty members said that it is a good move whereas others raised concerns and said that it may impact placement process.

Many students who are unhappy with the decision said that not getting a job is an individual problem.

It may be noted that still there is no clarity on this “exit exam”.
