Future of Data Science programmes

April 08, 2019

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal will offer an interdisciplinary four-year Bachelor of Science programme in Data Science and Engineering (DSE) from the academic year 2019-20. “Modern research is moving towards technology. For instance, Biotechnology is a combination of various branches of Science and technology such as molecular biology, bio-engineering, and biomedical engineering. Hence, it is an obvious decision for the institute to launch tech-driven programmes despite being known for science courses and research,” said Siva Umapathy, director, IISER Bhopal.

The purpose of the programme is to train young students in the field of their interest at undergraduate (UG) level, which will allow them to take up very specific and niche areas of study at master’s or Ph.D. level to improve employability. “Usually companies have to train students after the recruitment because the study programmes are not in sync with the industry. Students of the BS programme will have an option to work with companies in their fourth year of coursework to develop industry skills,” said Umapathy.

During the initial two years of the degree programme, all the students would be exposed to basic university-level science and engineering courses. In the next two years, the focus will be on advanced courses specialized in Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Applied Mathematics, advanced statistics, and modeling, along with various computational techniques and their applications to allied areas of Science and Engineering.

Some of the Data Science related research areas where this programme can have an impact are bioinformatics, drug discovery, smart materials, biomedical applications, climate modeling, computational material science, econometrics, natural language processing, social networks, and financial markets.

“The applications of the coursework are aplenty. From the development of intelligent robots to data-centric approach to economics to help the government in designing the fiscal policies in a more prudent manner, everything functions on data. Exponentially increasing dependence on data will require students to have a better understanding of social networks and data-driven computational methods to stay relevant in the job market,” added Umapathy.

The first batch of the DSE programme will commence in August 2019 and the last date to apply is April 28. The admissions will be through three channels – Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), IIT-JEE (Advanced) and the State and Central Boards (SCB).
