Colleges and universities in Patna has begun  the admission process for distance educations courses. Academic session for these courses will start from July.

Those who cannot attend regular classes due to various reasons seek admissions in universities offering distance education. Some may drop out of  college long ago while others may not afford to spend on higher education. Those who are employed may not have sufficient time to attend regular colleges. As far as women are concerned those who get married at a young age and cannot complete their education may opt for distance education.

Some open universities popular among students include National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Nalanda Open University (NOU) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), among others.

NOU registrar (examinations) S P Sinha told this newspaper, “Examination forms for UG and PG courses will be distributed from June 15.”

The NIOS admission process started in the mid of March. “Admissions are conducted twice a year — March and September. Approximately 8,000 students have been applying for admission to different courses at our regional centre since March 16,” said NIOS assistant professor Chunnu Prasad.

Applicants are also busy applying for different courses offered through distance learning. “I will apply for a UG degree in computer applications from NOU. I have visited the Patna centre twice to enquire about the process,” Koilwar resident Misha said.

Amit Anand from Chhapra will also apply for a BBA course from NOU.

NIOS student Aasid Karim chose the open university because “my parents are not financially strong”.

Girls like Enakshi Todwal, who find it difficult to pursue higher education because of “societal pressure to get married early”, believe that distance education is a saving grace. The Bettiah resident pointed out, “My family has always been conservative and did not allow me to go out to pursue higher education. NIOS was, therefore, my answer. I am studying BCom, at present.”
