Major initiative in runup to re-accreditation by NAAC

Bharathidasan University has operationalised its version of Digital India initiative ‘BDU Mobile and Web App’ by creating usernames and passwords for 180 faculty members and about 1,200 students of 39 departments.

The app was launched on October 31 by Vice-Chancellor P. Manisankar.

Developed under a memorandum of understanding between the varsity and uLektz Learning Solutions, the app has enabled students’ access to course materials in the forms of e-books, conceptual videos and exam-centric study material and improve learning outcomes. Its effectiveness can be improved through flipped classroom pedagogy, G. Parthasarathy, Director, University Informatics Centre, said.

Students can download books, powerpoint files, videos and other documents with file sizes above one MB from NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning, which is an initiative by seven IITs), NDL (National Digital Library of India) and other open sources, Mr Parthasarathy said.

The mobile app has made possible blended learning and acquiring credits under SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) programme of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The courses are offered by professors and faculties of Centrally funded institutions such as IITs, IIMs and Central Universities.

Students can access information on summer internships, and their curriculum vitae will be accessed by many companies. Once the students complete their course, their names will be moved to the list of alumni.

Faculties will be in a position to track the students’ levels of understanding of the lecture taught in each class, conduct tests, and provide remedial classes.

Henceforth, the university will send circulars about online hall ticket, exam fees application, convocation, alumni meet and other common events through the app, it is learnt. The digital learning platform is one of the major initiatives of the university in the run-up to re-accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
