With 250 companies expressing interest in recruiting candidates from Anna University, campus placement looks bright for good colleges and high performers. IT product companies offering annual salaries ranging from Rs 14 lakh to Rs 33 lakh are competing for ealry slots to hire the cream of talent.
DE Shaw, Cure Fit and Samsung R&D are some of the companies that have already visited the campuses. IT product companies like VISA, Citicorp, Wells Fargo, Amazon, Bank of America, Sap Labs, BNY Mellon have lined up for hiring at four campuses of Anna University.
“The salaries are high, and so are the recruiters’ expectations,” said T Thyagarajan, director, Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC), Anna University. Last year, around 220 companies recruited 1,349 students. “This year more than 250 companies have expressed interest. We expect more placements compared to last year,” he said. Many companies are this time offering internships before hiring. Students from Anna University have received 45 pre-placement offers this year from companies including Samsung R&D and RBS. “Students with multi skill sets stand a better chance,” said T Kalaiselvan, additional director, CUIC, Anna University. “IT services companies now offer higher salaries for full stack developers (who work with both the front end and back end of a website or application). Due to the demand for electric vehicles, automobile companies are asking for students with computer science background and knowledge of embedded systems.”
Anna Unviersity vice-chancellor M K Surappa said the university will conduct recruitment drives also for students from constituent colleges and affiliated colleges. “There is a reversal in recruitment trend compared to previous years. Recruitment by the manufacturing sector is yet to pick up,” he said.
Besides Anna University, top engineering colleges also had a promising start to their campus placement. “So far, 47 companies including major IT product companies have visited our campus and 200 students from our college have been placed,” said R M Kishore, vice-chairman, RMK Engineering College. Students here got pay packages ranging from ₹5 to ₹10 lakh per annum.
IT services companies are likely to recruit more students this year. “Due to more projects, IT companies are showing more interest in freshers. We expect the placements will be higher compared to last year,” said R Venkatesan, dean, placement and training, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.
“There has been a steady increase in freshers being hired by software product companies. More students are also showing interest in working for such companies,” said Suresh Sambandam, founder and CEO, OrangeScape. A fresher in product companies may get almost the same salary as that in IT services companies; but there could be an attractive jump after two or three years in product companies, he added
“Coding and hackathon challenges have become common to assess candidates,” said Supaul Chanda, head, TeamLease Digital. “While earlier there was an emphasis on the discipline to which students belonged, analytical aptitudes are in focus now. Understanding of technical skills such as coding, grasp of programming language python, and other basic machine learning skills are also expected, depending on the job role,” said Supaul Chanda
Aditya Narayan Mishra, director and CEO, Ciel HR Services said, “Freshers who have undertaken certification courses online voluntarily have an edge over other candidates, as they can clear technical tests easily and are viewed as more valuable.”
